29 % of the 86 tornadoes
examined occurred on lines of thunderstorms (some bowing).
This was the Albany County F1 tornado of 31 May 1998 (touchdown
2037 Utc). The storm produced 82 mph winds at the Albany
International Airport. (click on image to view larger

While some of the tornadoes associated with lines
of thunderstorms occurred with supercells possessing significant
rotation, a wind maximum was the more typical velocity
signature. Overall, the velocity signature of 29% of the
86 tornadoes examined was a wind maximum and not a rotational
couplet. The velocity maximum in the image to the left was
observed with the Fort Miller, Washington County, NY
tornado (F1) which touched down on 21 Aug 1994 (click on image to view

| Issuing Tornado Warnings based on the presence of
a wind maxima can be a risky proposition, and would likely
yield an unacceptably high false alarm ratio. Is there
anything the warning meteorologist can do to try to warn for
tornadoes associated with wind maxima? Click
